Kuala Lumpur Young Talent Chess Championship @ 25-26/07/2009



Kuala Lumpur Young Talent Chess Championship 2009

(Incorporating the KL Young Talent Development Program 2009/10)

Organized by the Kuala Lumpur Chess Association (KLCA) and played according to the FIDE Laws of Chess from 25-26 July 2009 at the 2nd Floor, Pearl Point Shopping Mall, Kuala Lumpur.

Format of Play & Time Control:
There will be 3 categories, U13, U-11, and U-9, each over 7 Rounds using the Swiss System and paired with the Swiss Manager program. Each player will be given 45 minutes per round to complete their games.

The Schedule of Play is as follows:
25 Jul 2009 (Sat):
1100-1200 Final Registration
1300-1430 Round 1
1500-1630 Round 2
1700-1830 Round 3

26 Jul 2009 (Sun)
0900-1030 Round 4
1100-1230 Round 5
1300-1430 Round 6
1500-1630 Round 7


Eligibility:

  • Under 9 (Boys & Girls) - born on or after 2000
  • Under 11 (Boys & Girls) - born on or after 1998
  • Under 13 (Boys & Girls) - born on or after 1996
Entry Fees:
KLCA Members*: RM 5
Others: RM 10
*KLCA Junior Membership is available at registration.

The Prizes (in each of the three categories) are:
Champion - RM 150 + trophy
Runner up - RM 100 + trophy
3rd placing - RM 80 + trophy
4th placing - RM 70 + trophy
5th placing - RM 50 + trophy
6th to 10th placing - trophy


If required, the following tie-breaks will apply (in order of priority):
a. Buchholz b. Sonneborn-Berger c. Cumulative
The closing date is 23 July 2009 after which a penalty of RM 10 may apply.

KL Young Talent Development Program

  • The first 3 winners together with the top 3 girls in each category will be invited to join the KL Young Talent Development Program 2009/10. Other participants may also apply to be members and this will be decided by the KLCA Council.
  • The KL Young Talent Development Program will run from August 2009 till July 2010 as follows:
  1. 12 weekend training sessions throughout the year.
  2. Free entry to KL Open and representation of KLCA in team competitions where possible.
  3. Special 4 day boot camp during long school terms break.
  4. Financial support in consultation with MCF if selected to represent Malaysia in designated ASEAN/Asian/World Youth competitions.

Round 6 Opponents for SKBJ Chess Players @KLCA Open - Challengers


After round 5, Fikri is leading the three SKBJ pupils who are participating in KLCA Open - Challengers with 3 points. Winning the first three rounds, he met Yeoh Li Tian on Board 3 in Round 4. Still he could not beat the Malaysian chess prodigy. In Round 5, he faced his Selangor Under 12 budding rival, Roshan Ajeet Singh. Roshan played well and defeated Fikri. In Round 6 tomorrow, Fikri will play against a Unitar student named Mohd Firdaus.

While both Affan Amrish and Anis Fariha just managed to score 1 1/2 points. Affan played againts a visually impaired player in Round 4 while Anis played againts Khaw yew Onn (the above picture).  Tomorrow Affan will play black againts Muhd Faris whereas Anis will play white againts Camilia Johari.

Fikri played black as well as Medina Wardina Aulia, who sit next to him.

SKBJ Players at KLCA Open

KLCA Chess Open had started yesterday. The first round was played at around 5:00 pm, about an hour delay from its schedule. There are two categories - Open for all chess players with FIDE rating of 2000 or above and Challengers for below 2000 rating. 

Three SKBJ pupils are participating in the tournament in Challengers category. They are Fikri Saleh of 6 Dedali, Affan Amrish Mohd Jalani of 5 Keranji and Anis Fariha Saleh of 4 Dedali. 68 players are playing in the Challengers section.


Round 2: Fikri won againts a promising Malaysian young talent, Amier Hamzah Mohd Zuhri whose latest national rating is 1350. He is just 7 years old.

In Round 3, Fikri played againts Agustinus playing white on Table 3. He used French Defense opening. He won the game and scored 3 full points.


Also seen in the above picture, Muhd Faris Aminuddin former SKBJ chess player facing Sarika Subramaniam. Both drew. A very good start for him since he won in Round 1. 

Round 2: Affan (right) playing againts Fernandez, Michael Howard. He is, if not mistakenly, the brother of Singaporean young FM of Fernandez, Daniel Howard who is playing in the Open category. (0-1)

Round 2: Anis (right)  playing white won againts Khaw Yew Tong.



In Round 3, Anis faced Latifah Syamimi on Table 21 playing white.  .. Kh5 37.Kh3 Rf4 38.Re8 is not the best move. She should move g4+. She lost the game due to lacking in the endgame.


Round 1 : Affan (right) lost to Roshan Ajeet, one of Selangor Under 12 player at MSSM Melaka last June.


Round 1: Anis (left) lost againts older player named Boey Jin Huey playing black. The young girl wearing red jacket is a player from Indonesia named Shieta Nyimas Prima whose age is 7 years old. 


Round 1 : Fikri playing black againts Boey Jin Wern. He won the first round.
